DYAD: By Douglas Fanning

Summer/Fall '19

Role: Intern, Fabricator

Summary

My internship at DYAD marked the beginning of my experience in a professional design studio—a pivotal step in my growth as a craftsman. DYAD expanded my foundation in craft and fabrication, bridging the gap between my skills and their real-world applications. Some of the pieces I worked on were among the first to be displayed in galleries or featured in people’s homes.

My responsibilities included welding, finishing, CNC use, sorting, cataloging, and prepping raw materials for both orders and custom pieces. In a short time, I gained invaluable hands-on experience and was trusted with making key decisions—along with the freedom to make mistakes and learn from them. This experience deepened my understanding of craftsmanship and the professional creative process.
